COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS: Day 5 of 7
KRAMPUS
Hi guys! So when you think of Christmas, the last thing you think is evil, which is why it came to my mind! I love looking beyond the curtain of things and talking about the darker side of the story. Today I want to tell you about Krampus!
You may or may not have heard about Krampus. I’ve been doing my research and I’ve found some interesting stuff! In the early stories of Santa, which I will tell you in tomorrow’s post, Santa is often not alone. Dating back to Christmas cards from the 1800s, Santa is accompanied by the Krampus, a creature who isn’t supposed to be evil but to punish children who are bad. He is often pictured as a half ram, half human, which is a traditional view of a demon.
The intention behind Krampus is not to be a scary, Christmas ruiner. He is said to be Santa’s partner in discipling children who have been bad. Obviously, no one wants to be on Krampus’s bad side, but he doesn’t roam around trying to ruin random people’s Christmas’, like the Grinch would.
The traditions of Krampus was so prevalent that in 1934, Europe outlawed it because of the Christian Social Party! Since the United States follows European Christmas traditions, the story of Krampus was buried. In 1950, the law was removed, but Krampus didn’t really make a comeback, until today. Krampus has recently made a comeback in media and story telling. Of course, this is only for the west, Krampus has been apart of Christmas traditions for many other people.
So Krampus, who has been around as long as Santa, is a Christmas demon who punishes bad children, while Santa rewards the good ones. Hopefully this year, Krampus will spare you!
Thank you for reading, I hope you guys enjoyed that post! Now you know the story of Krampus if it every comes up in your life! Have you heard this story before?
